CAA-Certified Remote Operator

Ground-to-Air Radio Coordination
Overview
Guardian Rescue’s drone (UAS/RPAS) unit adds an aerial capability layer to the organisation’s existing ground-based EMS, fire, and rescue services. Operating under full South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) certification, the unit provides a legally compliant, professionally piloted aerial asset that supports search and rescue, firefighting, and specialist commercial operations.
CAA certification means operations are conducted under a valid Remote Operator Certificate (ROC), with certified pilots, registered aircraft, and adherence to CAR Part 101 airspace and operational rules — critical when working near populated areas, other aircraft (including helicopter emergency medical services), or during multi-agency emergency responses.
Core Equipment & Certification
CAA Certification
Legal authority to fly commercially and within controlled or restricted airspace where required, including coordination with ATC and other aircraft during joint operations.
Ground-to-Air Radios
Real-time voice coordination between the drone pilot/observer team and ground crews, incident commanders, and other aircraft (e.g. HEMS on approach) – essential for deconflication and rapid tasking changes during live incidents.
Thermal Imaging Cameras
Heat-signature detection for locating people, animals, or hotspots in low-visibility conditions – night, smoke, dense vegetation, or water.
Service Lines
Lost Person / Search & Rescue Support
Wide-area aerial search using thermal imaging to locate missing or injured persons in terrain that is slow or dangerous to search on foot — bush, mountainous areas, agricultural land, or at night. Live video feed to ground teams allows rapid direction of responders to a confirmed location, cutting search time significantly compared to foot searches alone.
Firefighting Support
Real-time aerial footage of fire spread, hotspot identification via thermal camera, and situational awareness for incident commanders — showing fire lines, structures at risk, and safe access/egress routes for ground crews without putting personnel at height or in smoke to get that view.
Solar Panel Cleaning
(Specialist Commercial)
Drone-based inspection and/or cleaning support for solar installations — identifying soiling, damage, or hotspot cells via thermal imaging, which shows underperforming panels as heat anomalies, ahead of or instead of manual cleaning crews. Reduces downtime and access risk on large or rooftop arrays.
Additional Capabilities
Given the equipment and certification already in place, the following are natural extensions of the same core capabilities.
HEMS Landing Zone Reconnaissance
Pre-scouting and clearing landing zones for helicopter operations, checking for obstacles, wires, and ground hazards before an aircraft commits to landing.
Disaster / Flood Damage Assessment
Rapid aerial mapping of affected areas for response prioritisation.
Structural / Infrastructure Inspection
Roofs, towers, and water infrastructure, reducing the need for personnel to work at height.
Mass Gathering / Event Safety Monitoring
Crowd flow and incident spotting at large public events.
Mapping & Orthomosaic Surveys
Site mapping for planning purposes across disaster response, event logistics, and terrain assessment.
Water Rescue Support
Locating persons in water using thermal imaging, with flotation device drop where equipped.
Night Operations
Thermal capability extends search and monitoring into low-light and no-light conditions where ground teams are otherwise blind.
